Press Releases from the Primary Campaign
Kara Eastman is Ready to Bring Her Experience to Washington
April 19, 2018
“Now, more than ever, we need a representative in Congress who is willing to stand up and fight for the values we all share and for the needs of middle-class Americans. I am known for my ability to bring people together to get the job done, and I am looking forward to doing that for Nebraska’s Second District.”
Kara Eastman Stresses the Need for Strategy in Syria
April 14, 2018
“The situation in Syria is dire, and we must approach it carefully, with a clear strategy and understanding of the possible outcomes. We need a long-term plan of action to deal with this crisis, not just a reaction. ”
#VOTEPROCHOICE Endorses Kara Eastman in NE02 Race
April 3, 2018
#VOTEPROCHOICE, a political engagement platform focused on electing pro-choice champions up and down the ballot, just endorsed Kara Eastman, who is running to represent Nebraska’s Second Congressional District.
#VOTEPROCHOICE is endorsing Kara Eastman because of her unwavering support for reproductive rights and women’s health.
“I support freedom; our country was founded on it. Women are capable of making decisions about their own bodies without intervention from government. We should invest in education, healthcare and reducing poverty if we really want to help prevent unwanted pregnancies.”
Kara Eastman Hosts DACA Roundtable
March 28, 2018
On Friday, March 30th at 5:30 PM, Kara Eastman will be hosting a roundtable conversation with the DACA and Dreamer community. Dreamers are an integral part of our community, and must be protected from deportation. Ms. Eastman supports a clean Dream Act which provides a path to citizenship.
Kara Eastman and the Students of Omaha Demand Real Action on Gun Laws
March 19, 2018
On March 22nd at 4:15, Kara Eastman, along with student leaders in Omaha, will demand real action on gun laws now from Congressman Don Bacon. Together, they will deliver a petition with thousands of signatures calling on all lawmakers and candidates to refuse NRA money and to enact common sense reforms. These include a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high capacity clips and required background checks on all gun purchases.
“I am proud to support these students who are being so much braver than our elected officials are right now. It’s past time for common sense gun control legislation, and together we can pass laws to protect our children.”
Kara Eastman Pledges to Refuse NRA Money
February 23, 2018
Kara Eastman pledges to refuse NRA money and calls on her opponents in Nebraska’s Second District to do the same. Unfortunately, Congressman Don Bacon already has accepted over $18,000 from the NRA. Our government needs to take bold steps to ensure that our children are safe at school and that our neighborhoods are safer. The majority of Americans support common-sense gun safety legislation, and it’s time our government listens to them and acts.
“I have not, and will not, accept money from the NRA, and I call on my opponents to do the same. It’s time to listen to students, parents and teachers, not the gun lobby. We must pass a ban on the sale of weapons of war, institute universal background checks, and ensure longer waiting periods for gun purchases. Our children’s lives depend on it.”
Kara Eastman “Cements” 4th Union Endorsement
February 2, 2018
“When I am elected, I will continue to fight for working families and the things they deserve- fair wages, good jobs, healthy homes and accessible healthcare. I am honored to have the support of the Operative Plasterers & Cement Masons Local #538.”
It’s Time for Change in Our Leadership
January 30, 2018
“Our country’s leadership has lost sight of what is important and good for our nation. We need to be investing in American families – ensuring they have access to quality healthcare, jobs that pay a living wage, safe homes, and clean water. Carefully worded speeches do not mitigate the damage done by this administration to our environment, the deficit, and to marginalized groups.”
Kara Eastman declines nomination for MCC Chair
January 23, 2018
“It is an incredible honor to be nominated as Chair of the Board of Governors of MCC. MCC needs a Chair who will be able to dedicate their full attention to the students, staff, and faculty. I would want to give 100% and could give only 99% if accepted this nomination while also running for Congress. I am proud to support Mr. Grabowski as the Chair and will continue in my role as Vice-Chair.”
Kara Eastman says shutting down the government hurts Nebraskans
January 19, 2018
“There is never an appropriate time to shut down the government. Elected officials in Washington need to do their jobs and not allow anyone in Congress to hold the budget hostage.
I have had people reach out to me asking questions about the impact of a shutdown: if their healthcare benefits will be cut, how they will support their families during their deployment, and who will be furloughed.
We need to be focusing on jobs, healthcare, education, and the environment. We absolutely need to fund the CHIP program so children have healthcare. We need to create a pathway for DACA recipients to live in the country legally.
But those should be separate issues right now. Short-term budget solutions are not enough. Working families have to balance their budget and Congress needs to do the same. We need to fund our government so federal employees can continue to work and families can continue to pay their bills.”
Kara Eastman Endorsed by Eleven Local Elected Officials
January 12, 2018
“I am honored to have earned the endorsements of such a wide range of respected and accomplished elected officials. I’m especially happy that my campaign is resonating with elected officials involved in education and environmental protection. These endorsements mean so much in light of the work I’ve done to bring needed educational and health reform to the city and state.”
Kara Eastman says GOP Tax Bill is a Fraud
December 20, 2017
“Under this tax bill, the deficit will skyrocket, with $1.5 trillion in debt being added over the next decade. This is tragic news for all Americans who care about fiscal responsibility and government accountability. Any tax relief this will provide to the middle class is temporary. We should not support these policies. It’s time to vote those who do out of office in 2018!”
Kara Eastman receives major endorsement from Climate Hawks
December 5, 2017
“This endorsement is so important. Climate change is the biggest moral issue facing our children today. We know the facts about climate change – we also know that investing in our communities by creating energy efficient, safe and healthy homes can keep children from having asthma attacks, create jobs and increase the tax base in every community.”
Kara Eastman Officially Files to Run for the United States House of Representatives
December 1, 2017
“I am so proud of the progress our campaign has made thus far. Now we need to work even harder at the grassroots level to reach more voters and take back Nebraska’s Second District. I will fight to ensure that all Americans have high-quality healthcare, affordable education, a healthy environment, and a strong economy that works for everyone. Nebraska needs leaders who will represent our shared values and stand by their convictions.”
Kara Eastman Receives Third Union Endorsement
November 29, 2017
Kara Eastman states, “I am honored to have the support of the Insulators #39. I will continue to fight for our shared values — fair wages, economic growth and job creation. To rebuild our economy, we must put our workers first and take on the special interests that are only looking out for corporations. It is possible to both create new jobs and pay people fairly.”
Kara Eastman Says Net Neutrality is Key to Free Speech
November 22, 2017
Kara Eastman definitively states: “This is a clear-cut issue that has profound implications for our freedom of speech. I wholeheartedly support net neutrality and policies that uphold basic consumer protections. The internet shouldn’t be bought and sold by large corporations.”
Kara Eastman Says Keystone XL Vote Jeopardizes Nebraska
November 20, 2017
Kara Eastman states “I will continue to stand with the property owners, Native American tribes, and other citizens of Nebraska who disapprove of Keystone XL and have bravely stood in opposition to the project. As last week’s oil spill has shown, this pipeline is unsafe at any speed and we must continue to advocate for safe, clean energy alternatives that will not jeopardize our beautiful state’s future.”
Kara Eastman Says Don Bacon Forgot His Commitment to Nebraskans
November 16, 2017
Kara Eastman states, “Now is the time for us to stand up and say we will no longer support policymakers who do not fundamentally understand the needs of the vast majority of Americans. This bill is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to benefit those who can afford to pay more, including large corporations, at the expense of the middle class.”
Kara Eastman Opposes Tax Cuts for Corporations at the Expense of the Middle Class
November 2, 2017
Kara Eastman states, “We’ve learned that ‘trickle-down economics’ does not help middle-class families. We should not be placing additional burdens on already struggling workers and families. Cutting the corporate tax rate from 35% almost in half to 20% is not fighting for the best interest of all Nebraskans.
Eliminating deductions middle-class Nebraskans rely on is also unacceptable. Removing the student loan interest deduction places additional burdens on students and their families who are already asked to pay excessive amounts for their education. The State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction is vital, and is worth thousands to many workers and middle-class families in Nebraska. Cutting deductions for excessive medical bills when healthcare costs are at record highs is reckless behavior.
This bill reduces tax benefits for families while cutting taxes for corporations. Don Bacon should vote against this harmful bill that panders to corporations instead of Nebraska’s working, middle-class families.”
Kara Eastman Speaks Out On Behalf of Middle-Class Families
October 26, 2017
Kara Eastman states, “The budget passed today takes away health care from children. It cuts Medicaid and Medicare, on which many Nebraskans rely. It reduces the incomes of middle-class families. It cuts Pell Grants and Cancer Research. Worse, this budget paves the way for tax cuts for the rich while increasing taxes for working families. I’m tired of seeing working and middle class families struggle. They’re already struggling to pay their rent, living in unhealthy apartments and are paying too much in utility bills, medical bills, and student loan payments. This budget is another slap in the face to middle-class families. This is not how we do things in Nebraska and not how we should do things as Americans.”
Kara Eastman Shows Financial Strength in Nebraska's Second Congressional District Race
October 15, 2017
Congressional Candidate Kara Eastman has raised over $100,000 for the Democratic Primary in the Nebraska Second Congressional District in 2018. Kara Eastman states, “The number of Nebraskans that have financially contributed to our shared vision for the future of the Second District is a testament to the power of our shared values. They are passionate about the issues that directly impact us in our homes in the Cornhusker State – jobs and the economy, healthcare, education, and the environment.”
Kara Eastman Becomes First Candidate Endorsed by Labor in the Nebraska Second Congressional District Race
October 12, 2017
Nebraska State Legislative Board – BLET Chairman Pat Pfeifer states, “I am supporting and endorsing Kara Eastman to go to Washington D.C. and be the voice of Nebraska in the 2nd district. Eastman will fight for the rights, fair wages, healthcare, and education for all workers and their families. She supports union labor and also all wage earners that do not enjoy the benefit of belonging to a union. She will be a strong voice and advocate for all Nebraskans and their families.”
Kara Eastman Stands With DACA Students and Residents
September 5, 2017
CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance and Vice-Chair of the Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors, Kara Eastman stands with all DACA students and residents. Dreamers are our neighbors, our colleagues, our small business owners and our military service members. Kara Eastman is calling on all members of Congress to fight against this immoral act which will result in $460 billion in GDP loss. Congress should not be bullied into enacting laws that do not represent the values that we as Americans hold near and dear to us.
Kara Eastman Unapologetically Supports Public Education in Nebraska
August 30, 2017
As CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance and Vice-Chair of the Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors, Kara Eastman strongly disagrees with the prospect of a school “choice” plan espoused by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Speculated to come to Omaha in September, DeVos stands for a model of education that is anathema to many Nebraskans. Students are not customers who need a wide range of consumer options. Rather, public education is the bedrock of our society and economy and must be fully funded so all students, regardless of background, receive a great American education. Yet the administration’s proposed budget contains dramatic cutbacks to public education, while the Education Secretary backs more private options.

July 25, 2017
Kara Eastman, the President and CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, the Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of Metropolitan Community College, and the only life-long Democratic Congressional Candidate running in the Nebraska Second House District, will provide citizen testimony at The Nebraska Public Service Commission’s fourth public meeting on the Keystone XL at The Ralston Arena on Wednesday, July 26th, 2017 at 10:00 am.
Local CEO Launches Campaign Against Don Bacon
May 23, 2017
Kara Eastman, the President and CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance and Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of Metropolitan Community College announced today she is running to represent Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District. Kara will make healthcare, the economy, and education the focus of her campaign. According to Eastman, “I’m running because our community needs someone to stop the assault on public education, cuts to healthcare, rollbacks of health-protecting regulations, and the elimination of EPA programs that protect kids from lead poisoning.”
