Metro Community College board approves resolution supporting DACA, passes annual budget

"The Metro board approved a resolution on an 8-2 vote with one abstention to support the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, a policy executed by President Barack Obama five years ago. DACA at least temporarily prevents some children brought to this country illegally from being deported and allows them to pursue education and jobs. President Donald Trump this month said he intends to phase out the program."

Kara Eastman Stands With DACA Students and Residents

CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance and Vice-Chair of the Metropolitan Community College
Board of Governors, Kara Eastman stands with all DACA students and residents.
Dreamers are our neighbors, our colleagues, our small business owners and our military service
members. Kara Eastman is calling on all members of Congress to fight against this immoral act
which will result in $460 billion in GDP loss. Congress should not be bullied into enacting laws
that do not represent the values that we as Americans hold near and dear to us.

Kara Eastman Unapologetically Supports Public Education in Nebraska

As CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance and Vice-Chair of the Metropolitan Community College Board of Governors, Kara Eastman strongly disagrees with the prospect of a school “choice” plan espoused by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Speculated to come to Omaha in September, DeVos stands for a model of education that is anathema to many Nebraskans. Students are not customers who need a wide range of consumer options. Rather, public education is the bedrock of our society and economy and must be fully funded so all students, regardless of background, receive a great American education. Yet the administration’s proposed budget contains dramatic cutbacks to public education, while the Education Secretary backs more private options.

Dems hope Bacon, other GOP incumbents will be hurt at polls by failure to repeal Obamacare

" “Without health care, we as Americans are not free,” Eastman said. “So everybody in our country should have access to high-quality, affordable health care.”

She said that her nonprofit has seen the premiums it pays for its employees rise and that her relatives have struggled with the cost of prescription drugs.

Her mother, for example, has had cancer five times and now pays $800 a month for medication, but she’s on disability and takes in $12,000 a year. A doctor recently prescribed her a medication that costs $2,500 a month.

“Her life is potentially in jeopardy,” Eastman said. “The outrageous cost of prescription drugs in this country is just out of control.” "

Kara Eastman condemns Don Bacon’s vote to free Wall Street from many of the restrictions put in place after the 2008 financial crisis

Kara Eastman, the President and CEO of Omaha Healthy Kids Alliance, the Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of Metropolitan Community College, and the only Democratic Congressional Candidate running in the Nebraska Second House District, condemns Don Bacon’s vote to free Wall Street from many of the restrictions put in place after the 2008 financial crisis.

Don Bacon, with a voting record 100% in line with Donald Trump, cast his vote in the House yesterday to undo critical financial regulations for Wall Street firms and banks, enacted in 2010 to prevent another financial crisis. Most important, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will be gutted, an agency that has returned $12 billion to victims of financial malpractice in the last few years and fined Wells Fargo $100 million for fraud.

Kara Eastman’s response to Don Bacon’s vote:

Wall Street doesn’t need Washington to cater to its interests. Financial firms are highly lucrative, with average bonuses rising to over $138,000 last year, far more than what most Nebraskans earn annually. This rollback would allow companies to stop releasing information on how much CEOs make compared to an average employee, at a time when fast-food executives make as much as 1,200 times what workers do in a year.

This simply allows the conditions for another financial crisis to emerge yet again, with Wall Street executives making money betting against the middle class and working families of Nebraska. Nebraskans deserve better.

In race for 2nd Congressional District seat, climate change is becoming a hot topic
